Valle’s 12 Chefs Before Christmas

By Jenna Gabrial Gallagher

Some of the best moments of the holidays are the ones that capture the sense of wonder, discovery and the joy of giving that we experienced as kids.

On the evenings of December 14th and 15th, Chef Roberto Alcocer, his team at Valle, and 12 of his respected peers from Mexico and the US, are giving guests a chance to do just that with The 12 Chefs Before Christmas, a first-of-its kind culinary event in a beautiful seaside setting… all while supporting two important organizations that are helping children.

The Idea Behind The 12 Chefs Before Christmas

Chef Alcocer came up with the 12 Chefs Before Christmas as a way to combine a few of his passions: sharing the flavors of Baja, Mexico, his homeland, in innovative ways that people can really connect with; sparking that special alchemy that happens in the kitchen when great chefs get together to exchange ideas; and helping children in need.

With the full and enthusiastic support of Mission Pacific, he invited a dozen of the chefs that inspire him most from Baja and Southern California to cook with him and his team at Valle, a California Michelin Guide restaurant. There will be six chefs collaborating each night.

The lineup from Baja includes Javier Plascencia, Benito Molina, Solange Muriz, Victor Morales, Paulina Amador and Drew Deckman. The chefs from Southern California are Claudette Zepeda, Josh Gil, Diego Hernandez, Brian Redzikowsky, Moira Hill and Sergio Jimenez.

“I chose chefs that I respect…I like the way they cook, and I think they can vibe with each other. In the kitchen, it’s always a symphony,” explains Alcocer. While many of the California-based chefs are well-known, Alcocer says he’s excited to introduce the chefs from Mexico. “They have been doing a lot to put Baja on the map.”

How The 12 Chefs Before Christmas Supports Kids

As much as Chef Alcocer is looking forward to the event, he’s also really grateful to have this opportunity to help children. “When I see a kid in need, it just breaks my heart. So, I wanted to choose two charities that I know are really making a difference in the lives of kids.”

Tickets for the 12 Chefs Before Christmas are $250 each, with all proceeds on December 14th benefitting El Sauzal Casa Hogar Home for Children, a family-run orphanage helping abandoned, abused, and wounded children near Alcocer’s restaurant, Malva, in Valle de Guadalupe. On December 15th, proceeds will benefit The Autism Society of San Diego.

Alcocer says he’s been moved by the generosity of everyone involved with the project. From the chefs, for giving their time and talent, to Mission Pacific for donating food, staff hours and supplies, along with hotel rooms for the chefs and the beautiful Valle restaurant and terrace as an event space, to local purveyors, LMA Wines, and others who have donated. “I tell them about the charities, and they say ‘Let us know what you need.’”

What You Can Expect from the Evening

Guests will have the opportunity to meet the chefs as they mingle against the backdrop of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean during each evening’s cocktail hour on the terrace of Valle. There will be passed canapés, wine and live music, as well as a short presentation by a representative of the nonprofit selected for the evening’s proceeds.

At 7 P.M., just as the stars are starting to shine, Chef Alcocer will invite us all inside to dinner, where the styles, techniques and cultures of some of the most talented food visionaries of our time will be in harmony to create a dining experience like no other and a new line of hope for two communities of children.

“My dream for our guests is that you will be inspired by the foods of Baja so you will have a new destination to learn about and visit,” says Alcocer. “And that you’ll feel very good about the way you are helping kids”

Pride by the Beach: Where to Celebrate Pride in Oceanside

By Jenny Adams

Happy Pride! June is Pride month across the country, which means it’s time to unroll your rainbow flags and make your way to celebrate Pride in Oceanside.

Pride by the Beach

Balloon archways stretch between palm trees, bands strike up on the sidewalk, and colorful tents offer face painting, handmade jewelry, sweet treats, and tasty drinks.

Everywhere you look, there will be joyful moments on June 11 as Oceanside celebrates the 15th annual Pride by the Beach. Running from noon to 6 p.m. just a few blocks away from Mission Pacific, the festival is organized and executed by the North County LGTBQ Resource Center, which has a mission to empower, serve, and advocate for the region.

Bring the whole family (including pets!) for the all-day fun with more vendors, food trucks, and an entire second stage for even more entertainment, like musical headliners Holy Rainbow Club and Boi Band. The incomparable Paris Sukomi Max is this year’s drag headliner and emcee and will perform a Disney-themed show like no other, focused on classics like The Little Mermaid and Moana.

Beat the heat with Mahalo Shaved Ice Company, grab a Pride by the Beach t-shirt, and enter your pup in the inaugural Pet Contest! For more dining and drinking perks, pick up Pride & Brew card online or onsite. The card gives you discounts on beer, cocktails, wine, and food at participating restaurants.

More Pride in Oceanside

If you can’t make it to Oceanside on June 11, don’t worry. The first weekend of June, North County LGTBQ Resource Center will also host a calorie-busting Zumba class, a Light Up Pride Interfaith celebration at the Methodist Church, and a Flag Raising for the community. October is also a popular time for Pride events in Oceanside, with the resource center’s Drag Takeover at Belly Up fundraiser and annual Gala, both bringing in hundreds of participants.

San Diego Pride

San Diego is famous for fostering an incredible LGTBQ+ community, and its Pride celebrations throughout the summer draw hundreds of thousands. While there are events throughout June, including the second annual Black Pride on June 25-26, the bulk of San Diego Pride activities happens in July.

From a rally to a 5K Run, from She Fest — a full day celebrating powerful women  —  to a cathedral lighting ceremony, the month is packed with events, with the main Pride weekend on June 15-17. One of the largest Pride parades in the U.S., drawing in more than 250,000 spectators, the San Diego Pride Parade on July 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will end at the entrance to the San Diego Pride Festival, running from 11 a.m. on July 16 to 10:00 p.m. on July 17. Oceanside’s North County LGTBQ Resource Center will be on-site, from a tent promoting advocacy and volunteer efforts to marching in the parade, waving one of the largest transgender flags in the U.S.

Happy Pride!

2022 Southern California Wedding Trends

Why more and more couples are saying “I Do” in Oceanside.

By Suzanne Davis

The only thing more fun than a wedding? A beach wedding! The only thing more fun than a beach wedding? A beach wedding held at Mission Pacific!

That’s right: The sleek Oceanside respite at the water’s edge is nothing less than cinematic. Thanks to beach butlers, unforgettable dining options, and a plethora of Instagrammable guest rooms — all just across from the sand — it’s the place where fairytale dreams come true. So it’s no wonder couples flock to Mission Pacific for their Big Day like so many seagulls.

To find out what wedding trends are rising to the surface at this seafront hideaway, we asked the pro — namely, Rebecca Venturi, Event Sales Manager for Mission Pacific. Here are a few themes and thrills that couples in the know are saying “I do” to right now:

Boho Beauty

“Couples are really going with the coastal bohemian vibe that the hotel already offers,” says Venturi. “They are choosing neutral tones and natural elements that speak to what the space has to offer. Dried florals and grasses and statement pieces that match the overall feel of the property.” The ideal setting for that theme? The hotel’s Upper Terrace, where guests can gather around the rooftop’s flickering fireplaces for cocktails overlooking the famous Oceanside Pier.

Anything But Garden Variety

What if you could hold your ceremony or reception in a lush, manicured garden that peeps out onto the misty sea? You can at Mission Pacific’s 2,800-square-foot Pacific Garden, which has an iconic neighbor in Oceanside’s 1887 Grave’s House (it had a star turn in Tom Cruise’s Top Gun). “We are also seeing the Pacific Garden utilized as a true garden space,” Venturi says. “Couples really love that they can have an intimate outdoor setting which still offers views of the ocean without being over-exposed.” Dressing the groom in aviators and a Maverick-style jumpsuit is entirely up to you.

Pet-Friendly Nuptials

If you’re among the bajillion couples who’ve had fur babies before human babies, you may appreciate this little factoid: Mission Pacific is as dog-friendly as it gets. No wonder soon-to-be newlyweds are including their pets in their Oceanside wedding plans. “One of our couples had their pup as part of their wedding procession and he wore a little doggy tuxedo!” Venturi recalls. “It was so cute!” Staffers are happy to share nearby pet-friendly dog parks, restaurants, and of course, beaches, should your four-legged friend need a breather before or after the ceremony.

Foodie Delights

Remind your wedding guests to come hungry. Chefs at Mission Pacific source many of their ingredients from regional waters and farms. Translation: the freshest possible dishes for your wedding. Reception options include everything from BLT bites with heirloom tomatoes and thick-cut bacon to lobster bisque with lemon chive crème fraîche. “The inspiration of local SoCal culture, and the access to amazing food and views really makes you feel like you’re on vacation in paradise,” Venturi says. Don’t miss treating your guests to California cheese plates with local honeys, apricot sourdough bread, and sherry-soaked raisins.

A Bit of Fine Print

If you want to wed on Oceanside’s shores, there is a little legalese to keep in mind. “Oceanside allows beach weddings September 15 to May 15 each year with permitting that can be obtained through the City of Oceanside,” Venturi says. “A lot of couples ask about this and we are happy to help guide the process. However, most couples love the idea of staying at Mission Pacific for all of their events because everything is available here in one place. We make it easy for them in that way.”

Guests Honor

The best part of hosting your wedding in Oceanside may just be the megawatt VIP treatment you receive at Mission Pacific. “We have access to Sunny’s Spa at the Seabird, the amazing rooftop pool with cabana rentals, an amazing intimate rehearsal dinner space located within Valle, with Chef Roberto Alcocer. And the proximity to the beach!” Venturi adds. She and her staff can organize room blocks and customize the event according to your preferences. “Couples love that their guests are going to be impressed and entertained when coming here. We create and execute an event they will truly be proud of, and take these special moments they are trusting us with and turn them into memories they will have forever.”

Valentines Day in Oceanside

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in Oceanside: 3 Different Ways

By Alana Morgan

Looking for romantic getaways from Los Angeles or the best hotels in San Diego for couples? Prefer to keep things classic with roses and Champagne or tend to go for more adventurous activities? Whatever your style is as a couple, Oceanside (and Mission Pacific) offers the Valentine’s Day escape to match.

1. For the Hopeless Romantics

Long walks on the beach, postcard-worthy sunsets, Champagne, and roses — these tried and true elements of a romantic getaway never disappoint. After two years of interrupted travel plans and staying home, simply going back to the basics, like sneaking away for – a night – or better yet – a long weekend – with your significant other is appreciated on a whole new level.

Book Mission Pacific’s Loving Feeling package (see below) and escape to one of our Sanctuary Studios — known for their sweeping Pacific views from the personal balcony where you two can unwind in pure privacy with a separate lounge, plush king bed, and sleek, freestanding tub in the stylish bathroom. Toast your love with a complimentary bottle of Champagne upon arrival (who can resist a bottle of chilled bubbles waiting just inside your door?) and unwind during a memorable evening complete with a bubble bath sprinkled with rose petals.

(Not able to make it right around Valentine’s Day? No worries. The Loving Feeling package is available for booking and stays through the month of February.)

Up the romance factor by indulging in other romantic experiences. The next morning, indulge in an iconic ritual breakfast in bed, courtesy of in-room dining. Then head across to Sunny’s Spa, situated in our sister hotel, The Seabird Resort, for a curated couples’ spa journey. Held in a meticulously designed duo suite, the treatments offer intimate moments of connection, reflection, and restoration — the perfect start to a new year.

2. For The Outdoors Lovers

If the idea of the perfect date or weekend away involves working out and soaking up the great outdoors, Oceanside is a dream destination. Pair a restorative stay by the beach with your preferred way to work up a sweat and enjoy the great outdoors together.

A sunset stroll or rooftop drinks looking out to the Pacific (or both!) set the scene for your couple’s escape. In the morning, rise early for a meditative walk on the beach, just steps from Mission Pacific, grounding yourself in the sand while inhaling the salty sea air. Over a healthy breakfast at High/Low (the vegan banana pancakes are divine) choose how to spend the rest of the day. A long coastal bike ride? Rent a bike or beach cruiser from our partner Pedego. Want to catch a wave? Make learning to surf one of your New Year’s resolutions. Looking for something more low-key but still on the water? Rent a stand-up paddleboard at Oceanside Boat Rentals (just a five-minute drive from Mission Pacific) and explore Oceanside’s local bay. While staying at Mission Pacific, you can appreciate both a romantic vibe plus choose-your-own-adventure experiences.

3. For the Power Couple

To really wow your special someone and celebrate your love in style, go all out this Valentine’s Day with the most luxurious romantic getaway from Los Angeles. Mission Pacific’s Ultimate Escape package pulls out all the stops for a lavishly romantic getaway.

A dozen roses and a bottle of Champagne welcome you and your significant other as you step into an expansive Dreamscape Suite. Surrounded by sweeping ocean views, the suite includes a separate bedroom with a king bed, a lounge area, and a spacious, spa-inspired bathroom with a standalone soaking tub and shower. Before getting too comfortable, however, you’ll set out on a private sunset helicopter ride following the coastline and watching the sun’s last rays light up the sky before landing back in Oceanside. From there, savor a prix-fix menu at Valle Restaurant. Showcasing inventive Baja California flavors and the finest locally sourced ingredients, the elevated dining experience offers a feast for all senses. When it’s time to check out, you’ll still enjoy luxe treatment with a VIP transfer home.

Intrigued? This exclusive offer isn’t available for booking online. Contact us directly to plan your personalized package for stays anytime in February.

Sunny’s Spa: Tinsel And Tidings

The holidays are all about engaging the senses — and so is a visit to a superlative spa. Sunny’s, the spa and beauty lounge at The Seabird Resort, sister hotel to Mission Pacific, was designed to reflect this holistic philosophy, with treatments harmonizing the principles of wellness with innovative beauty science.

Your sense of vision is engaged immediately after stepping through the spa’s welcoming yellow doors, which frame a serene coastal-chic oasis decorated with live plants, artisan-made objects, and textural flourishes. The aroma of Apothia’s Chrismukkah candles, which blend the recognizable character of fir and spruce trees with buoyant notes of crisp ocean air, will attract your sense of smell.

The healing power of the sea is central to the restorative Sunny’s experience. Spa treatments incorporate a mix of locally and globally sourced products that align with Oceanside’s hyper-local “farm-to-sea” ethos. And unlike the tucked-away spas of yore, Sunny’s emphasizes a sense of place with its natural light–filled layout and atmospheric decor.

Spa director Marissa Edwards believes that this warm, convivial ambience appeals to both solo guests in search of seclusion and couples or pals seeking indulgence. “Our relaxation lounge overlooks the ocean, and it’s the perfect space to cuddle up with a glass of bubbly or warm herbal tea,” she said, noting that guests are still required to adhere to its comprehensive COVID policies. “Additionally the space we call The Cove, which features a state-of-the-art Sanarium sauna, cold misting showers, and radiant heated stone seating, is also a perfect space for guests to enjoy together.”

Sunny’s is adding plenty of sparkle to the offerings for its inaugural holiday period. Sunny’s has put together a collection of special spa and beauty treatments designed to leave guests cozy, relaxed, and ready to celebrate the season. Each experience includes a thoughtful gift to match the holiday cheer.
