Where to Stay for IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside 2022

Oceanside has been a haven for fitness buffs for decades and IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside proves why.

By Andrew Bender

The first IRONMAN race took place in 1978, and today the IRONMAN Group operates more than 250 races per year, in 57 countries. And although that first race was in Hawaii, the IRONMAN movement actually has its origins right here in San Diego County. U.S. Navy officer John Collins and his wife Judy thought they’d shake up their training regimen with different kinds of workouts, and that became the idea for turning it into a competition. By competing in an IRONMAN here in Oceanside, the county’s northernmost beach town, you’re effectively returning to where it all began.

When some of the world’s fittest folks will converge here again this April 2, Mission Pacific will offer a front row seat to the action — and it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind post-race, or to put your head in the game before it.

The triathlon itself is a grueling test of endurance — 70.3 refers to the distance competitors will cover! It kicks off with a 1.2-mile swim around Oceanside’s harbor, picture-perfectly decked out like an old-style fishing village. That’s followed by 56 miles of cycling in the rolling hills north of town, taking in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton (including San Mateo Hill — called by the veteran-run website We Are The Mighty “one of the most notorious natural obstacles over which Marines will climb”) and San Onofre Bluffs State Park. Only then comes a 13.1-mile half-marathon along Oceanside’s Strand, lining the Pacific Ocean.

The race ends at Oceanside Pier, the longest wooden pier in the western U.S., extending 1,942 feet over the water and — convenient for the competitors — just steps from Mission Pacific, where you can rest, recharge, and refuel.

The resort’s Sanctuary Studios, available with a partial ocean view or a full ocean view, are the perfect place to rest up before the race and relax after you finish. At nearly 450 square feet, these guest rooms are each the size of a small apartment — if that apartment was blessed with an ocean view and the bright sun and clean, fresh air of the San Diego coast.

To ensure a thoroughly restorative rest, the Sanctuary Studios are outfitted with the latest bedding technology from Eight Sleep, whose Pod Pro Covers are designed for thermoregulation and biofeedback. Not only are you able to control the mattress temperature, but track vitals, including respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability — an ideal sleep situation for athletes preparing for peak performance.

Plush robes and large, spa-inspired bathrooms further create a private sanctuary to mentally get in the zone before the race then recoup with a touch of luxury afterward.

How to Recharge in Oceanside

Unwind after the race at Sunny’s Spa.

After a triathlon, what could be more needed than a massage? At Mission Pacific’s sister property, The Seabird Resort (right across the street), Sunny’s Spa offers a sports recovery massage to soothe muscle knots and help those stiff joints regain their range of motion. Tweaked your back, neck, or shoulder? The comprehensive spa’s expert therapists can customize a 30-minute massage to address wherever ails you.

That’s all in addition to other treatments: Thai-style stretching, deep tissue massage, and healing body wraps with ingredients from seaweed to CBD. To heal the mind as well as body, try a sound bath, reiki treatment or even gemstone therapy.

And if you need a facial after a day out in the elements, Sunny’s Spa also has you covered. Sun relief and beach repair treatments may come in especially handy.

Once the muscles feel a little looser, keep them moving with some light activity the day after the race. Oceanside is filled with outdoor adventures, ranging from paddleboarding in the bay to pedaling around on beach cruisers.

Where to Eat Healthy in Oceanside

Before the race, Piper at The Seabird makes pre-race carbo-loading a snap, with handmade pastas and other healthy, nutrient-dense dishes while afterward you can refuel with more farm-to-table fare. The casual restaurant, situated right off the beach, also offers an extensive juice and smoothie menu made from 100% organic fruits and veggies so you know you’re only getting the good stuff. Try the aptly named “Kale for the Win” green juice, which is chock full of organic kale, cucumber, Granny Smith apple, lemon, and mint. Going for more calories and protein? The “Fluffernutter” smoothie tastes like an elevated version of childhood with peanut butter, dark chocolate, banana, and almond milk.

With a California coastal-cool vibe, Piper is also just a welcome spot to grab a seat on the sidewalk terrace and watch the world go by as you take a break.

Want to let loose after the race? Back at Mission Pacific, head up to The Rooftop Bar to toast your finish in style with signature cocktails paired with Pacific Ocean views.

How to reflect, relax and recharge in Oceanside

Waterfront Wellness: How to Reflect, Relax, and Recharge in Oceanside

Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly. —Van Morrison

By Jenny Adams

No matter who you are or what your circumstances are, you’re likely due for some time to rest, reflect, relax, and recharge. Whichever R&R combo you’re looking for, Oceanside is an ideal getaway choice: With plenty of sun, sea, and sand, it’s a place that lets you fully unwind, indulge, explore, and more — the perfect restorative weekend.

The sense of wellbeing starts in your room or suite at Mission Pacific, where casual yet refined Southern California style envelops you in plush bedding, spa-inspired baths, private balconies, and original artwork curated by the Oceanside Museum of Art. Just steps away: a three-mile stretch of beach and the Pacific Ocean.

From this soothing sanctuary, it’s easy to experience Oceanside’s wellness offerings, whether you prefer to retreat in solitude or actively participate in the natural world around you.

REFLECT

There’s a reason we are drawn to the sea beyond the simple pleasures of sandcastles and suntans. Since ancient times, the ocean has attracted humans, revered not only for the awesome power of wind and water but also for its ability to stir something deeper within us.

Make the most of your proximity to the Pacific by beginning each morning with a leisurely stroll on the beach. Take deep breaths. Stretch each muscle. Inhale. Exhale. The soothing waves invoke a meditative state, and the world’s worries melt away as you bury your toes in the sand.

Of course, you can stay here to do your daily yoga practice or journaling, but other Oceanside destinations also encourage you to turn inward.

Five miles away from Mission Pacific, the tranquil Mission San Luis Rey is home to a welcoming community of Franciscan Friars. Founded in 1798 and the largest of California’s 21 missions, the architecturally stunning building is open daily to the public. Wander through the inviting grounds, complete with a museum and chapel, on a self-guided tour before spending time in the well-kept gardens for a moment of meditation and reflection.

Prefer a moving meditation to make that mind-body connection? Head right next door to The Seabird Resort for a complimentary 1-hour morning yoga class led by rotating local instructors in OMA West at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sundays.

RELAX

You can certainly turn your Mission Pacific room into a spa-like sanctuary by soaking in the spacious tub or drinking in the ocean view from your private balcony. But if you’re craving deep relaxation, visit Sunny’s Spa at The Seabird Resort. Opt for a classic deep-tissue or Swedish massage, which helps loosen tired muscles and calm the mind. Or try one of the spa’s innovative treatments, such as the Vagus Nerve Massage, which targets the longest nerve in our bodies to help core functions like digestion, stress response, and sleep patterns.

Along with individual treatments, Sunny’s Spa also provides full-body packages, like The Soul Ritual (105 minutes), where one can select an accompanying aromatherapeutic scent blend — like the Wake-Up blend of lemongrass, peppermint, and rosemary or the Let Go combo of bergamot, clary sage, and chamomile — to help rev up or calm down. If the office followed you to the beach vacation, The Soul Ritual is the cure.

Of course, finding an open spot to do your own practice with a view at Mission Pacific is also an option.

RECHARGE

Oceanside offers plenty to pique your interest, from refreshing outdoor activities to enticing meals, so you end your stay not just feeling relaxed but reinvigorated.

Walking, running, and cycling trails throughout Oceanside and the surrounding area offer varied settings to get your heart pumping. Don’t have your own bike or prefer a more leisurely approach? Pick up a rental bike — standard or electric — from our partner Pedego right at the hotel. Feel best when you’re one with the water instead? Oceanside is known for its highly surfable swells and offers a number of beaches perfect for catching a wave. Whether you want to try surfing for the first time or level up your skills, you can reserve a group or private surf lesson with a local pro.

After being flooded with endorphins, head back to the hotel for a restorative meal. Our chefs prepare the freshest produce and ingredients for every menu we offer, whether it’s room service or delicious Baja-inspired dishes to share up on The Rooftop Bar. Savor inspiring flavors and inspired signature cocktails, looking out over the Pacific as the sun goes down. Wellness is about balance, after all!

Guide for summer skin, girl by the pool

Summer Skin Care

Beyond SPF: The skin and hair gurus at Sunny’s Spa and Beauty Lounge share advice on protecting yourself from harmful rays.

By Liz Sheldon

Skin care has become a cultural obsession, spurred on by scientific innovations and an explosion of independent and newly imported brands. But you don’t need a 10-step K-beauty routine to achieve glowing skin. In fact, the best thing you can do for your skin is to prevent sun damage. Protecting your skin from UV rays will help reduce wrinkles, discoloration, age spots, and the risk of long-term health issues like skin cancer.

No one knows how to combat the sun’s effects on skin and hair than the experts at Sunny’s Spa & Beauty Lounge, who treat sun worshippers spending full days on the beach and surfing the waves. The signature treatments at Sunny’s, located at The Seabird Resort, specialize in replenishing hydration and combatting UV damage. Lead aesthetician Sydney Eger shared her pro tips on how to care for your skin before and after sun exposure.

Protection and Prevention Above All

You already know it’s important to apply sunscreen before you head out, but reapplying often and adding protective layers of clothing (hey, long-sleeve swimsuits are trending!) are also key. “If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, wearing a wide brim hat and sun-protective clothing is ideal,” says Eger. “Most importantly, use water-resistant SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, and right after getting out of the water.” She points out that SPF numbers actually measure how much longer your skin would take to burn if it was totally unprotected — not necessarily how many minutes you can stay in the sun. Picking high-quality products will also make you more likely to reapply, says Eger: “I recommend Soleil Toujours Organic Sheer Sunscreen Mist SPF 50. It’s a gorgeous natural product that gives 80 minutes of water-resistant sun protection with the benefits of a nourishing skin care product.”

Treat Your Face Gently

On beach days, adjust your skin care routine even before SPF comes into the picture, advises Eger. “Hold off on exfoliating as well as using serums like retinols, which make the skin more vulnerable to the sun’s rays,” she advises. “Instead, gently cleanse and follow with a vitamin C serum, which will help fight free radicals.” Sunscreen should be your final step, and should go on your brows, upper lip, neck, ears. and, for women, the décolleté. “These areas are often neglected, but are some of the most sensitive spots and need the most protection,” Eger says. The “two-finger approach” is an easy way to measure: For each area of your body, use as much product as it takes to line two fingers.

Hydration Is Key, Even If Your Skin Looks Fine

You might slather aloe on severe burns for relief, but Eger suggests building some gentle aftercare into your routine, even if you’ve followed all the advice above. “Sun-exposed skin is thirsty skin that’s likely dealing with inflammation, even if there is no visible burn,” she says. “Hydrating with something like Osea Hyaluronic Sea Serum is a must for replenishing and soothing skin.”

Nothing compares to an in-person visit with Eger and her team of expats at Sunny’s for a Sun Relief Facial and Sun Salutation Body Treatment. “These are designed to brighten, hydrate, soothe, and replenish skin with powerful antioxidants,” she explains. “In particular, the Sun Relief Facial provides a one-two-punch of cooling hydration from our snow algae treatment, while a mask made with Australian Super Berries brightens, hydrates, and nourishes sun-drenched skin.”

Don’t Forget Your Strands and Scalp

“An area we often neglect when it comes to sun protection and repair is the scalp and hair,” warns Eger. “We tend to forget protection there, but UV rays damage both, and the results can be slow hair growth, lackluster shine, and dull color.” That’s why Sunny’s offerings also include a scalp treatment to prevent future UV exposure, protection against the negative effects of chlorine or salt water, and softening products to repair stiffness. At home, Eger says, “a must-have for me is the Save Me From Sun + Sweat Hair Reboot. It’s a leave-in hair and scalp treatment you should apply before and after the beach or the pool.”

The coolest way to work up a sweat in SoCal

Learn to surf, do yoga under a full moon, or put in some serious miles on the bike.

By Liz Sheldon

A longtime haven for surfers and street skaters, Oceanside has a rich history as an action sports destination. No wonder: It’s got wide sandy beaches, sunny days, and protected preserves and parks that draw boundary-pushing pros and weekend warriors alike. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ways to get your heartrate up and your adrenaline flowing while staying at Mission Pacific.

Hit the Decks

Fibreflex, the first laminated wood skateboard deck, was crafted in 1964 in San Diego, and revolutionized the way skaters performed tricks. Since then, the San Diego region — and especially Oceanside — has produced legendary skaters and hosted seminal events like the Oceanside Pro Freestyle competition. If you missed learning how to skate as a kid (and want to join the current new wave of older and female skaters), it’s not too late. Mission Pacific offers daily 90-minute lessons for adults at one of Oceanside’s local skate parks, where pros like Neal Mims will teach you the basics — how to stand on your board, safety tips, maybe even your first ollie.

Stretch It Out

Looking for a more peaceful way to warm up your muscles and center yourself? Plan a day around one of our yoga classes taught by our locally-based experts Rebel and Muse or Sculpt FIT classes (find a full schedule and booking here). Offered daily in several of our favorite outdoor spaces, yoga offers an all-levels way to truly relax and get into a flow while you’re traveling. For something a little more strenuous, join a Sculpt FIT class — high-intensity moves set to a motivating soundtrack. For something only-in-Oceanside, check the schedule for our monthly full moon yoga classes at The Seabird. There’s nothing like basking in the glow of the moon as it reflects off the Pacific to quiet your muscles and your mind.

Have a Swell Time

Surfing is at the core of Oceanside’s beach culture. Many epic professional and amateur surfers call it home, and it hosting competitions like the Super Girl Surf Pro. If you’re also obsessed with carving up waves — or if you’re curious about the sport — schedule at least one lesson with our partner North Country Surf Academy, featuring professional surfer Duran Barr. Our surf valet makes it easy by bringing a wet suit, surf board, and bag of surfing swag right down to your lesson, which takes place directly in front of Mission Pacific. Beginner? Pros will teach you the basics (paddling out, board positioning, safety tips) before guiding you into the waves to put your new skills into action. If you’re already a seasoned surfer, join the local regulars near Oceanside Pier or hone your craft at the more spacious Oceanside Harbor.

Explore the Bay

For a more chill way to explore Oceanside’s local bay, rent a stand-up paddleboard at Oceanside Boat Rentals, about a five-minute drive from Mission Pacific. For an even more stable way to get up close and personal with the water, try a kayak. Either way, you’ll get in an easy workout while having fun — and basking in the views of Oceanside’s charming marina, bay, and beaches.

Take a Two-Wheel Tour

Road biking is big in Southern California, and Oceanside offers miles and miles of well-groomed trails to explore, with a range of intensity levels. We have both standard and electric bikes for rent by our partner Pedego, so you can plan a route that begins and ends right at our doorstep. For an easy cruise, take the car-free San Luis Rey trail to the 1789 Mission San Luis Rey, where you can tour the alabaster-white church or just have a picnic on the lawn. For a more serious haul, set off on the 45-mile route to the rugged Torrey Pines State Park in La Jolla and go for a dip in the ocean before heading back for a well-earned cocktail. Want more options? Oceanside is home to three sections of the Coastal Rail Trail, a 44-mile route that will eventually connect O’side to Downtown San Diego.

See SoCal on Foot

Walking is another rewarding way to discover downtown Oceanside and the surrounding parks and preserves. The pedestrian-friendly San Luis Rey River Trail follows the river from the beach inland to Mission San Luis Rey. For a chill, pet-welcome stroll, head to Guajome Regional Park, which includes 4.5 miles of flat trails that wind around two ponds and a cross-section of wildlife habitats, from grasslands to wooded areas. Nearby you’ll also find the 4.8-mile Lake Calavera loop, a moderate trail that’s known for its wildflowers. A short drive south will land you at the extensive Mission Trails Regional Park, 8,000 acres of protected recreation area that includes trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, guided nature walks, even a lake for boating and fishing. Plan your visit using the park’s trail map
