The Destination: Matsu: Oceanside, CA

There’s a reason Chef William Eick has caught the interest of international food reviewers with his acclaimed Matsu. Well, make that 10 reasons. Guests of the restaurant are treated to a 10-course tasting menu, showcasing the seasonal bounty from regional farms while marrying the traditions and techniques of Japanese food. Having initially started as a pop-up restaurant, Matsu has become a permanent fixture since 2021 with a 6-course tasting menu also on offer. The restaurant has received several awards for its Japanese-SoCal fare and sublimely reductive presentation. It was included in Food & Wine’s “Best Cities for Food in the U.S,” and food critic Brad A. Johnon recently said it was “one of the best restaurants in California and a strong argument for putting Oceanside on your to-do list.”

The Destination: Wrench & Rodent: Oceanside, CA.

The highly creative Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub is essentially a playground for maverick Chef Davin Waite. The sushi and omakase menus are focused on hyper-local ingredients that are transformed and paired with playfulness top of mind. It never gets old here. And that’s the point. For ten years, Waite keeps things fresh for locals, tourists and sustainability enthusiasts. A pioneer in sustainability, Waite has received global accolades for whole species utilization and his dry-age fish program, which reveals nuances of textures and flavors. Waite has created a mini culinary empire, which includes Brine Box on Oceanside Pier, 100% plant-based, zero-waste The Plot in Oceanside and The Plot Express at The Cottages in Carlsbad

The Destination: Jeune et Jolie, Carlsbad

Smart and pretty. It sums up the French nouvelle sensibility of this high-designed Carlsbad restaurant, which embraces indoor-outdoor dining to the max. Inside, rose-colored velvet banquettes are front row seats to the open kitchen, where dining is most certainly theater.  Don’t be fooled by the too-pretty-to-eat plating. Executive Chef Eric Bost has earned accolades for his unique combinations and mature treatment of Cal-French fare with lively flavors. Named one of Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America, the exuberant space blends Parisian polish with the casual, California culture. Its sister restaurant, Campfire, is two blocks south on State Street, utilizing wood fire and seasonal ingredients. Together, these two eateries established allure in the now- buzzy Carlsbad Village.

The Destination: Valentina, Encinitas

You can’t head south without exploring Hwy 101 in Leucadia where restaurateur Mario Guerra is methodically building a tasty little monopoly. The neighborhood slogan is “Keep it Funky” but this stretch has certainly been elevated by Guerra’s Leucadia Co.

Valentina is his casual neighborhood European-style bistro and wine bar. Pro surfers and musicians feel right at home alongside local families and tourists swirling glasses of Burgundian Brut. The Steak Frites are a serious contender alongside Wiener Schnitzel, Mussels Mariniéres and a crispy paella. Wander down to his other establishments on The 101; they include Corner Pizza, Hamburger Hut, Moto Deli and next up, Nacho’s Oyster Bar, an oceanic experience inspired by Mexico, The Mediterranean and Japan.

Behind Oceanside’s Michelin Star Restaurant:

We delve into the culinary adventure that is Valle.

Under the genius of Chef Roberto Alcocer, dining at Mission Pacific’s Valle embodies a new kind of culinary destination with its Michelin Star rating. It’s a soulful one, rooted in Baja Mexican cuisine while tapping into the youthful spirit of Oceanside, one of Southern California’s last authentic beach towns.

Valle offers a striking sense of discovery. The refined modern expression of Mexican cuisine served in an elegant dining room is set against Oceanside‘s edgy surf-and-skate community. The juxtaposition proves irresistible for the culinary adventurer, who can delight in Alcocer’s own risk-taking during the eight-course tasting menu.

“Dishes strike a winning balance between tradition and creativity,” states the Michelin Guide. “As in a tetela made with heirloom corn masa and hoja santa, filled with juicy chanterelle mushrooms and creamy goat cheese, and paired with a complex salsa of morita chiles — at once earthy and bright.”

The wine and bar program, meanwhile, is central to the gastronomic experience. There’s agave-based cocktails and a rare-gem wine list featuring boutique blends from Valle de Guadalupe, courtesy of Alcocer’s connections.

THE BAJA CONNECTION

With more than 20 years of experience cooking across Mexico and in Michelin-starred kitchens in France and Spain, Alcocer is a visionary of Baja Mexican cuisine at Malva, his long-acclaimed culinary destination in Valle de Guadalupe.

Serving a dynamic fusion of traditional Baja flavors and contemporary techniques, Valle showcases the richness and diversity of the terroir in both California and Baja Mexico. The kitchen, headed by Alcocer and Chef Raul Casillas, is an alchemist’s lab, transforming traditional ingredients into dishes that are visually stunning and gastronomically delightful. The flavors are robust and honest, reflecting the team’s respect for their ingredients.

“I’ve dreamt of this moment since I started cooking in France 21 years ago, and today the dream has become a reality. This star symbolizes the passion, relentless dedication, and countless hours of work we have put into Valle,” says chef.

ABOUT THE MICHELIN STAR

With this accolade, Valle becomes Oceanside’s first and only Michelin-starred restaurant. Valle also breaks new ground as San Diego’s first Michelin star for a Mexican restaurant. Better still? It is the only new spot in San Diego to receive a star this year.

The Michelin Guide and its iconic stars have long been the yardstick par excellence for fine dining. It’s hard to believe that 120 years ago, the world’s most prestigious cooking accolade started out as a way to sell more tires. When Édouard and André Michelin published a guide for French motorists, full of handy information like maps, mechanic listings and hotels, they probably never imagined that it would graduate into the global benchmark for excellence that chefs hang their careers on. Today, the 28 guides cover over 25 countries.

When you look at the most popular foodie destinations across the US, the usual cities come to mind — New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago. But the Michelin Guide has helped rework the map. If you are traveling in search of great foodie destinations in 2023, you’ll be better off heading to parts lesser known like Oceanside,
a surprising place to find one of the country’s most vibrant culinary scenes.

We tip our hats to Alcocer, who today is a North Star for authentic and approachable, yet elevated and one-of-a-kind food with Valle in Oceanside, North County San Diego.

24 Hours: Mission Pacific, Oceanside, Ca

The Summer Edition

Even the New York Times deemed it “Southern California’s most authentic beach town.” These days, there’s no denying Oceanside’s allure. So, we’re presenting a jam-packed itinerary to experience Mission Pacific’s irresistible sense of energy while venturing to the heart of what makes Oceanside tick—from locals-only beach style to high-designed rooftops.

Toasts of the Town

Swirl, sip and brag. At Valle, oenophiles can gain access to the rarest wines from Guadalupe Valley—some of the most prized in all of Mexico. Strict US import laws make it nearly impossible to taste its top-rated Petit Verdot, for example, from boutique producers like Vinsur Reflejo. Also unique: Rosé of Malbec. It’s all thanks to internationally acclaimed Chef Roberto Alcocer, who lured his native winemakers to bring their most luscious blends, centering his menu around the pairing experience. Nab your reservations now.

Oceanside State of Mind

Seekers (sun, spiritual, and culinary) pilgrimage to Mission Pacific for a retreat that elevates every aspect of lifestyle and culture. So, what better way to set your vacation intentions than with morning rooftop yoga perched above the Pacific? North County San Diego is actually the American birthplace of yoga, authentically deepening the mind-body connection. Next up? Brew. Coffee or beer: That is the question. High/Low at Mission Pacific Hotel serves both Revolution Roasters and Après Surf Coastal Ale, a collaboration with Bagby Beer.

Look the Part

The easygoing and edgy Oceanside lifestyle is something visitors will want to take home with them. Our advice? Pack light and load up on a few key pieces that will solidify your local cred. From your sunhat to your button-down shirt, we’re presenting the workhorses of your SoCal wardrobe that will transcend souvenirs to a deeper brand connection. Discover The Ozone, our boutique brimming with local San Diego brands like Green Pacha (hats), Aloha (totes) and Raen (sunglasses). Meanwhile, don’t miss the groovy boutique experience that is Linksoul, a local golf brand known for outfitting Pro golfer Bubba Watson.

Your Place in the Sun

So you’ve got your date night reservations but what about your VIP seats in the sand? Hotel guests can reserve complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas at The Strand, courtesy of The Beach Rambler, our lovingly restored mid-century Holiday Rambler. Feel like cruising? We’ll also set up your bike rentals at Pedego. Like to plan ahead? Reserve here

Hang Time

Sure, Mission Pacific Hotel’s Surf Concierge will definitely dial in the local surf lessons with all the best gear. But for those fitness gurus looking to diversify the workout portfolio with a unique local twist—don’t miss the original location of the now big-in-Brooklyn bouldering gym—Vital. A vibrant playground of rock-climbing culture, sign up for a beginner clinic or the aerial silk classes held in the man-made caves. It’s a soulful immersion into a fitness craze grounded in Southern California.

Photo Finish

Dream vacations require photographic evidence. And Oceanside delivers megawatt photo ops. On the shot list: Downtown’s wondrous art murals, our very own historic Top Gun House—now home to The HIGH-Pie—and the Oceanside Pier across the street from Mission Pacific. At 1,942 feet, it’s one of the West Coast’s longest piers. Standing directly underneath the wooden structure reveals an amazing ‘window’ to the Pacific. Also golden? Our date palm trees on The Rooftop Bar. They frame the ultimate California moment. Just add cocktails. The Moonlight, named for the local surf break, brings the fizz with Prosecco, gin, strawberry and hibiscus tea.

Into the Groove

There’s this undeniable temptation to linger. The Rooftop Bar hotel bar is a lush, inviting refuge that personifies endless summer with all of its leafy landscaping and laid-back California decor. From sunrise to sun-soaking to sunsetting to stargazing and all points in between, this perch is Mission Pacific’s escapist paradise. Come Saturdays, it is an electrified hotel rooftop atmosphere with Groove Society, luring the region’s top DJs and musical talent. Hotter still? This summer’s 30 For 30 vacation package? All Roads Lead To Oceanside

By Jenna Gabrial Gallagher

From flagship sports and surfing events like the Oceanside Longboard Surf Contest and Beach Festival, Race Across America, Super Girl Surf Pro and the World Bodysurfing Championships to community events like Pride by the Beach and Oceanside Harbor Days, to world-class dining and sight-seeing and relaxing, there is so much to do in Oceanside this spring and summer.

Unlike most picture-perfect vacation spots, Oceanside is easy to access. Mission Pacific Hotel is right on the beach and within a two-hour drive of three international airports, plus three regional airports. There are plenty of public transportation options as well. Here are some of the best ways to get to Oceanside from anywhere.

By Plane

Oceanside is only 40 miles from San Diego International Airport, 85 miles from Ontario International Airport, and 90 miles from LAX. Regionally, we are served by McClellan-Palomar Airport (a mere 11 miles away), John Wayne Airport (50 miles), and Long Beach Airport (70 miles). No matter where you’re flying in from, Mission Pacific Hotel is always happy to arrange your ground transportation through our partner, La Costa Limo.

By Car or Motorcycle

It takes less than an easy, scenic hour to drive to Oceanside from San Diego. Just take the I-5 North, then exit at 53-Mission Avenue. If you’re driving to Oceanside from Los Angeles, take the 405, merge onto I-5 South just after Aliso Viejo, then exit at 53-Mission Avenue. From inland, Highway 76 West will bring you right to us, or take Highway 78 West to I-5 North. Once you arrive, Mission Pacific Hotel offers safe overnight valet parking for only $44/night.

Beautiful scenery may not be the first thing you think of when you think of public transportation, but when you take the Coaster commuter train from San Diego, you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy breathtaking California shoreline views. The Coaster makes 30 daily trips Monday-Thursday, 32 on Fridays and 20 daily trips on Saturday and Sunday, and runs year-round with eight stops between downtown San Diego and the downtown Oceanside Transit Center, less than a half-mile from Mission Pacific Hotel. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner train hugs the coast between San Luis Obispo and San Diego and also stops at the Oceanside Transit Center, making it a great way to get from Los Angeles to Oceanside.

The Ozone – Mission Pacific’s Boutique Sets Trends for the Beach and Beyond

By Andrew Bender

Visitors to Oceanside in recent years have noticed a sea change in the shopping scene, from practical to fun, fashionable to just plain cool.

Leading the way is The Ozone at Mission Pacific. More than just a hotel boutique, “The Ozone aesthetic reflects all the originality and freshness that is the Oceanside, West Coast, California lifestyle,” says the shop’s creative director/buyer Karen Meena. “It’s an inspired mix of beach living, vintage pieces, fashion favorites, and new designers.”

Whether you’re looking for clothing or accessories for women, men or kids, home décor, books, body care, or gifts to wow the folks back home, The Ozone has you covered with a curated selection of goods that are always on point and often unavailable anywhere else — all inspired by the ocean just out the window.

It’s made The Ozone a magnet from the instant it opened in summer 2021, with clientele from hotel guests to neighbors out on their morning dog walks.

“They’re so excited to be here,” says store manager Jess Murphy. “We get comments from visitors like ‘There’s nothing like this even in my entire state!’ We also have our local customers who pop in every week to say hello and see what’s new.”

Here are just a few of the favorite brands and finds you can pick up at The Ozone (along with an extra-special shopping experience).

Shopping opportunities in Oceanside

Local Love

Let’s start with local brands. The Ozone carries Rais Case (handbags), Feather4Arrow (kids clothing), and Raen (sunglasses), making nationwide names for themselves from right here in Oceanside.

From nearby Encinitas, designer Tristan Detweiler of Stan recently won a Rising Star award for fashion design. “He hand sews vintage quilts and textiles to create his one-of-a-kind luxury collection of tops, jackets, and outerwear,” Meena says. “We launched him when we opened the store here, and he’s going to do a pop-up with us too” — one of many events the shop does throughout the year. The Ozone also sells handmade hats by Encinitas milliner Austin Zito of Zito Hat Co

Other signature Southern California brands include Aviator Nation (Meena calls it “a classic LA brand with a cool ‘70s vibe” — The Ozone stocks some of their more unique items), Free City (limited edition clothing), Madeworn (rock band t-shirts made with throwback designs, down to their 1970s-quality stitching from Japanese looms), Outerknown (sustainably produced surf-inspired clothing like the “blanket shirt,” in partnership with surf legend Kelly Slater), Osea (body care products, which you can also try at Sunny’s Spa at the Seabird), and Apothia (creators of The Mission Pacific and sister resort The Seabird’s signature fragrances).

And among The Ozone’s exclusive brands, Meena says, “We have a tie-dye artist who hand tie-dyes vintage shirts, so they’re all one of a kind.”

The Ozone also launched Drake’s California on the West Coast (alongside Bergdorf-Goodman in New York). A former designer for Nili Lotan now makes her own line of hoodies with clever fashion sense, in plush French Terry fabric and featuring “bracelet sleeves” and lower necklines, so your jewelry doesn’t have to hide.

Even legacy designers get The Ozone treatment: Respoke makes espadrilles using upcycled, vintage fabrics from Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Pucci, and you’ll find vintage home décor collectibles from the likes of Versace, Hermès, and Christian Dior.

For Home and Bookshelf

Beyond fashion, Meena says, “I’m happy to say that books are still some of our best sellers — we do book signings, too.” Here you can browse an array of titles covering cooking to fashion to music, including many about California.

Within The Ozone’s home collection, if you like the style of the pillows at Mission Pacific (and how can you not?), you can buy them here. Nearby is “acrylic crystal” barware from Italian designer Mario Luca Giusti. “You really have to hold these to realize they aren’t glass,” Murphy says. More than just clever, there’s a practical purpose: Any Californian will tell you that you don’t want breakable glassware anywhere near swimming or surfing, so they’re perfect for adding elegance to a beach or pool party.

The Ozone also stocks housewares from Missoni Home, like bathrobes, throws, and beach and pool towels. “People are very excited because it’s really hard to find Missoni Home in San Diego,” says Meena. You’ll also find journals, trays, and boxes from Christian Lacroix

And although The Ozone is proudly Californian even the East Coast is represented, with Connecticut designer Kerri Rosenthal’s throws, sweaters, and artwork. “It’s a very happy, joyful, positive message with bright colors, and has resonated well with our clients,” Meena says. “We love it.”

Personalized Styling and Shopping

We bet you’ll love The Ozone too.

And for the full-on treatment, Meena says, “Guests are invited to stop in or call The Ozone to schedule personal styling and shopping appointments with our team of stylists.”

Whether for yourself or for gift-giving, she says, “Our team will discuss with guests their personal shopping needs, sizes, and colors, and pick out a selection, which can be tried on in-store or can be brought up to the guest’s room.”

It’s all designed, she says, “so you can take a taste of Oceanside home with you.”

The Ozone is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the street level of Mission Pacific. All goods are also available online, anytime.

Couple’s Escape from L.A.

By Liz Sheldon

There’s nothing more romantic than a sunny weekend escape by the ocean, with delicious food, inventive cocktails, and fun activities. And there’s nothing less romantic than sitting in traffic or rushing through a busy airport. So may we suggest a quick escape from L.A. to Oceanside, California? Our 48-hour itinerary for couples starts with a picturesque train ride down the coast and comes complete with surf lessons, spa treatments, and some damn good tacos. We’ve mapped it all out here so you can just relax and enjoy.

Friday Afternoon

Ease into the weekend with a leisurely ride on Metrolink, whose Orange County Line winds down the scenic SoCal coast on its way to Oceanside. Soak in the romance of the rails and see if you can achieve Inbox Zero before the R&R begins.

Friday Evening

Check into your ocean-view room at Mission Pacific in time to catch a dreamy Pacific sunset. Then head upstairs to The Rooftop Bar and enjoy the warm coastal breeze — preferably with a zesty Pina Mia (made with serrano-infused tequila and pineapple-infused mezcal) and a few of Chef Roberto Alcocer’s Baja-inspired small plates, like ceviche tostadas and octopus tacos.

Saturday Morning

Sleep in — it’s Saturday! Then head down to breakfast at High/Low, our all-day California-style cafe. The coffee comes from Oceanside’s own Revolution Roasters, which also bakes the fresh pastries — try their homemade Pop-Tarts, filled with local strawberries. Or go savory with spicy huevos rancheros.

Saturday Afternoon

Oceanside offers some of the best surfing in the world, and the seasoned experts at North County Surf Academy can help even total beginners experience the exhilaration of catching a wave. Book a couple’s surf lesson in advance with our concierge. When the lesson’s over, hang out on the beach and watch the locals showing off their skills (many pro surfers call Oceanside home), or stroll the famous Oceanside Pier and maybe even cast a line.

Saturday Evening

Wind down at Sunny’s Spa & Beauty Lounge, located next door at our sister property The Seabird Resort. The full-body Soul Ritual experience includes breathwork and a body scrub, while the Ocean Devotion treatment offers deep hydration, perfect after a day in the sun. Or book a duo treatment, specially designed to help you decompress and reconnect with each other.

Saturday Night

You’ve tasted chef Roberto Alcocer’s casual Baja-inspired food, now try his elevated take on the cuisine of the Guadalupe Valley, Mexico’s most famous wine region. The warm and inviting space at Valle is perfect for a date night, with an inventive menu that highlights the fresh-caught seafood and flavorful local produce — like bone marrow crème brûlée with California sea urchin.

Sunday Morning

Feeling healthy? Head to Piper, across the street at our sister property The Seabird, and order the Superfood Bowl, with açai, sunflower butter, bee pollen, and hemp and chia seed granola. Feeling indulgent? High/Low chef Tara Lazar highly recommends the flaky donuts at Parlor Doughnuts in town. (Explore some of her other local haunts here). Then head to the renowned Oceanside Museum of Art, whose rotating exhibits feature local artists in all stages of their careers, many of them inspired by the sea and surrounding landscape.

Sunday Afternoon

Before checking out, swing into Mission Pacific’s retail space, The Ozone, to pick up some gifts designed and made by members of Oceanside’s burgeoning creative community — leather bags from Rais Case, sunglasses from RAEN, jewelry by Zofia Day. Soak up some final moments of sun by the pool at The Shelter Club, and have a perfectly cooked burger with views of the sea before heading back to the Surfliner fully rested and restored.
